Analytical carryover in a sample sequence
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
Carryover concerns a signal remaining from an earlier sample or analytical step. Sequence context matters when reviewing a result. A small peak should not automatically be attributed to the current specimen without checking the surrounding run.
A worked example
Consider a teaching sequence with a high-response sample followed by a blank. If a signal appears in the blank, the reviewer investigates the sequence and method rather than calling it an ingredient of the blank. The example illustrates a question to ask, not a pass limit or a laboratory protocol.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Check the run order, blank results and documented acceptance criteria. Do not select an arbitrary threshold or transfer a criterion from an unrelated assay. A single clean trace does not describe the entire sequence.
