Extraction recovery in sample analysis
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
Recovery describes an aspect of how material is measured through a procedure. Its interpretation depends on the design and calculation. A recovery figure is not automatically a statement about overall product purity or clinical performance.
A worked example
In a teaching example, a known addition is compared before and after a preparation step. The reviewer asks which difference the calculation isolates and whether the comparison is appropriate. Calling the resulting percentage “product strength” would change the meaning of the experiment.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Read the numerator, denominator and stage being evaluated. Keep recovery information distinct from identity, content and uncertainty. Any correction of a reported result needs documented reasoning rather than an assumption that one percentage fixes every source of measurement error.
