Matrix effects in bioanalytical measurement
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
A biological sample contains more than the target analyte. Its matrix may affect the measured response. A method needs an appropriate assessment rather than an assumption that a clean standard and a study sample behave identically.
A worked example
In a fictional dataset, the same nominal amount gives different responses in two sample backgrounds. The reviewer first asks whether the method accounts for the backgrounds. Simply ranking the peak heights would confuse the measurement environment with the quantity of the target. No clinical conclusion follows from this illustration.

Read the method scope, sample matrix and validation evidence. Keep an observed signal separate from an interpreted concentration, and do not use a matrix-effects discussion as a claim about the quality of a NOVEX product.
