Internal standards in bioanalytical assays
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
An internal standard is used within an analytical procedure to support measurement. Its role must be described by that procedure. It is not another declared component of the original product merely because it appears in the analytical record.
A worked example
Imagine a teaching chromatogram with two labelled signals, target and standard. A catalogue editor should not copy both labels into the product ingredient list. The added analytical material and the original sample have different roles. The correct response is to read the method and distinguish them explicitly.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Check what was added, when it was added and how the response was used. Do not treat an unexplained peak label as a verified ingredient or assume every assay uses the same standard strategy.
