NOVEX NOTES 196 / English
Water content and dry-basis reporting
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
A result can depend on the basis used to express it. Water content and the chosen reporting basis should be explicit where relevant. Two percentages with different denominators are not automatically comparable.
A worked example
In a teaching worksheet, one amount is related to the material as received and another to a defined dry basis. The reviewer records the denominators before calculating any difference. A mismatch could reflect reporting conventions rather than a change in the target substance.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Read the method and basis of calculation. Do not convert between bases without the necessary measured information, and do not equate a dry-looking powder with a verified water-content result.
