Recovery correction and reporting results
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
Applying a recovery correction changes the reported result and requires an explicit rationale. The correction factor and its uncertainty matter. A calculation should not be hidden behind a final number without a description of its basis.
A worked example
A teaching spreadsheet divides every result by 0.8 after one preliminary test. The reviewer asks whether that factor applies across the relevant samples and conditions. The mathematical operation is easy to reproduce, but the justification cannot be recovered from the output alone.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Record whether a correction was applied, where the factor came from and how its limitations were handled. Do not choose a factor because it makes the result closer to the label claim, and do not overwrite the original measurement history.
