NOVEX NOTES 175 / English

Chromatographic retention time and identity

Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026

Understanding the question

Retention time belongs to a defined chromatographic procedure. Similar times may be informative within that context, but a number alone is not a complete structural identification. Conditions and supporting evidence need to be considered.

A worked example

In a fictional comparison, two laboratories report a signal at a similar minute mark under different methods. A reviewer does not merge the reports solely because the times look alike. The relevant question is whether the procedures and identification criteria support the proposed correspondence.

Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings.

What to check

Keep the method, reference information and acceptance criteria with the time. Do not treat a retention-time match as proof of every structural detail, actual content or suitability of a commercial sample.
