NOVEX NOTES 177 / English
Chromatographic resolution and peak width
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
Resolution concerns the separation of chromatographic peaks, including their widths. Different retention times alone do not fully describe separation. The result needs the appropriate definition and method context.
A worked example
In a teaching drawing, two narrow peaks have clear space between them. Another pair has the same distance between centres but much broader shapes. The reviewer should not describe both pairs as equally separated simply because the centres are equally far apart.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Check the resolution definition, processing and relevant pair of signals. A satisfactory result for one pair does not establish separation from every possible impurity. Avoid changing numerical criteria without a documented analytical basis.
