NOVEX NOTES 176 / English

Peak height versus peak area

Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026

Understanding the question

Peak height and integrated area describe different features of a chromatographic signal. The selected measurement and processing method determine how the signal is interpreted. Visual height alone is not a universal quantity scale.

A worked example

Consider two fictional peaks: one is narrow and tall, the other broader and lower. Their areas may be similar even though their maximum heights differ. A reviewer asks which response the assay uses before comparing amounts. The illustration is geometric, not evidence about a particular product.

Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings.

What to check

Read the response definition and integration procedure. Do not substitute a screenshot impression for the validated calculation or compare heights from plots with different vertical scales as if the numbers were directly interchangeable.
