NOVEX NOTES 180 / English

Separation factor versus resolution

Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026

Understanding the question

A separation factor and peak resolution describe related but distinct chromatographic properties. Their numerical values are not interchangeable. The appropriate definition is needed before evaluating a reported change.

A worked example

A fictional report says that a parameter increased from one run to another, but the editor labels it as a different separation metric. The resulting statement may look plausible while describing the wrong quantity. The reviewer returns to the report header, symbols and calculation before rewriting the conclusion.

Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings.

What to check

Preserve the original metric and units where relevant. Do not treat any increase in a separation-related number as the same improvement, and do not apply a limit intended for another parameter.
