NOVEX NOTES 181 / English
Gradient versus isocratic chromatographic methods
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
A chromatographic method is more than a technique label. Its operating programme is part of the procedure. Results obtained under different programmes need a justified basis for comparison.
A worked example
In a fictional review, one report changes mobile-phase composition during the run while another uses a constant programme. The editor should not compare retention times as if both records used the same conditions. The first task is to establish what each method measured and how identity was assigned.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Keep the documented procedure version and operating conditions with the result. Do not reconstruct a method from a product-page abbreviation or assume that the same instrument name establishes equivalent separation performance.
