NOVEX NOTES 179 / English
Co-elution and chromatographic specificity
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
A single displayed peak need not settle every question about overlapping components. Interpretation depends on the separation method and supporting detection evidence. A visually simple trace is not automatically a complete composition report.
A worked example
In a teaching sketch, two underlying signals overlap so closely that the combined trace looks like one feature. The reviewer asks how the method addresses relevant interference, rather than announcing that only one chemical component exists. The sketch illustrates a possibility, not a diagnosis of a real chromatogram.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Check specificity evidence and the scope of the assay. Do not claim an unresolved impurity is present without data, but do not use a smooth outline as proof that all possible interferences were excluded.
