Calibration weighting and model performance
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
A calibration model includes choices about fitting and error structure. A single summary statistic does not describe performance across the whole range. The selected model should be justified for the intended measurement.
A worked example
In a fictional dataset, high-response points dominate an unweighted fit while lower-range predictions perform less well. The reviewer inspects errors across the range rather than celebrating one high fit statistic. Choosing a different fit only because it improves a favoured sample would be inappropriate.

Read the documented model and validation evidence. Compare performance where results are actually reported, and do not select weighting by trial and error until a desired product value appears.
