Back-calculated calibration standards

Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026

Understanding the question

Back-calculation compares model-derived values with assigned calibration values. It is one way to inspect a calibration model. The exercise must be interpreted with the method’s predefined criteria and intended range.

A worked example

A teaching worksheet starts with known levels, records their signals and then uses the fitted relationship to estimate those levels back. If discrepancies vary systematically across the range, the reviewer asks about model suitability instead of focusing only on the central point that looks best.

Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings.

What to check

Keep assigned and estimated values distinct. Do not describe back-calculated agreement as an independent analysis of an unknown product, or alter acceptance rules after seeing the run.
