Forced degradation versus shelf-life studies
Editorial educational material · 16 October 2026
Understanding the question
Stress investigations and studies supporting storage claims have different purposes. A result needs its conditions and question stated clearly. Deliberately stressing a sample is not the same as observing the product under its proposed storage conditions.
A worked example
A teaching report shows how a material changes under a specified light stress. The editor does not convert the duration directly into a commercial expiry date. Instead, the editor asks what the experiment was designed to reveal and which additional data support any storage statement.
Original editorial teaching example, not clinical trial findings. What to check
Keep stress conditions separate from routine storage information. Do not invent a shelf life by scaling one exposure period or transfer the finding to a different formulation or package.
